New England coastal towns, lobster traps are a sign that Christmas is on the horizon. The tradition of a Christmas built from lobster traps is reported to have begun in 2001 in the town of Gloucester Massachusetts. The salty town by the sea still builds a 35 foot tree in its downtown each season to honor its lobstermen and the fishery. (Image - Kim Smith)
The Beachmere Inn in Ogunquit uses wooden traps to build it's vivid lobster trap tree overlooking the sea.
The Beals Island lobster trap tree towers on Piero Point. In 2011 lobstermen contributed more than a thousand traps to build a tree 60 feet tall.
In Rockland, the 40 foot tree is erected in a park overlooking the harbor. The 150 taps are donated by Brooks Trap Mill in Thomaston and later raffled off to raise money for Rockland Main Street.
Fox's Lobster House builds its 15-foot trap tree from wooden lobster traps. The lobster trap tree's lights shine brightly against the backdrop of nearby Nubble Light.
